Fall Risk Awareness by Season

The change of season may provide environmental challenges that can increase your risk of falling. Be aware of some of the common causes of falls by season!


Fall Risks and Tips by Season

WINTER

  • Watch for snowy or icy sidewalks, curbs, stairs and roads

  • Wear rubber soled footwear that are secure; avoid soles made of slippery leather, slip-in shoes (like clogs) and high heels

  • Ask your doctor about taking Vitamin D supplements

  • Make sure your home has lots of light

SPRING

  • Watch for uneven ground when walking, exercising, or gardening; watch for trip hazards

  • Keep the floors clutter free

  • Secure doormats with double-sided tape (especially outdoor polypropylene rope mats)

  • Don’t use mobile devices while walking

SUMMER

  • Ensure that sunglasses aren’t so dark that they restrict vision

  • Secure doormats with double-sided tape (especially outdoor polypropylene rope mats)

  • Don’t use mobile devices when walking

[DON'T] FALL

  • Leaves on the ground can be slippery!

General Tips to Prevent Falls

  • Ask your pharmacist to review your list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and nutritional supplements to see if they may cause drowsiness or dizziness

  • Exercise to improve strength and balance. Ask your healthcare provider for exercises that are appropriate for you, using our list of exercise options

  • Have your eyes checked every year by an optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye doctor)

  • Ask your healthcare provider if you need vitamin D supplements to improve bone, muscle and nerve health

  • Get your feet checked every year by your primary care doctor or a podiatrist (foot doctor)

  • Check your home for common fall risks using the list of tips to make your home safer
