Understanding Common Health Conditions that may Increase Your Fall Risk

Most people aged 65 and up, are at risk for at least one of these common medical conditions*. These conditions may signal the need to begin assessing fall-risk using a multisensory assessment. Once you know your risk, you can take specific actions to prevent falls!

Common Conditions of People at Risk for Falls

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Vitamin D deficiency

  • Osteoporosis

  • History of fall or Repeated falls

  • Diabetes or other sensory deficiency

  • Neuropathy

  • Vision Exam (abnormal findings)

  • Orthostatic hypotension

  • Difficulty walking, Gait abnormality

  • Lack of coordination, Poor balance

  • Muscle weakness (generalized)

  • Decreased cognition

  • Attentional complaints

*This list provides the most common conditions that may increase fall risk. The list is not exhaustive.
